This is Jack London's beloved "Valley of the Moon," where oak-covered hills give way to acres of vinyards and dozens of wineries, large and small.

Wine Country Ecology and Natural Habitats
Sonoma Valley, closer to the sea than Napa and about 17 miles long, contains more ranches and farms which give way to a more spontaneous, less-structured visit to the wine world.
With many creeks and streams throughout the valley, scenic riparian habitats provide easy access to spot rocks, birds, flowers and trees. Near the north end of the valley, a self-guided discovery tour and trail explains the geology of nearby 1/2-mile high Sonoma Mountain.
